From Vancouver to Victoria

Hey everyone,

Been sometime since I posting anything here......was caught up with out of town jobs which I end up spent almost half month in Victoria. But because of the opportunity I was able to photograph Victoria's Chinatown, which claim to be one of the oldest in Canada, on my spare time.

Anyway, it's interesting after visiting several old Chinatowns from different cities to observe how these communities have become. Toronto's Chinatown is still vibrant and remain as one of the commercial center for Chinese communities living in the metro area. Vancouver's Chinatown is still vibrant but many of Chinese in Vancouver today would prefer suburbs where large modern Chinese shopping centers were built to accommodate them. As for Victoria's Chinatown, it is merely become a tourist attraction. Aside from physical appearance, there's very few Chinese that living or operating businesses there. On the street you'll find far more tourist and more than half of the stores are operate by non-Chinese.

So what's next? more Chinatown in Vancouver before going back to San Francisco's Chinatown......but before that I need some more research and a bit help on funding

Hi Everyone,
Glad to see people posting here.
JBG - to answer your questions, I shoot shoot shoot and edit later. I don't think about editing while I am shooting. My husband Peter is nasty brutal (aka honest) when I'm editing. It's great to have a second set of eyes that you trust helping with image selection.
Also, I personally prefer your first bowling image - the one where the ball is just about to hit. The anticipation in that photo is exciting. I dig it alot!
Hi Ted. Pregger photos, hey? I had a friend shoot me in studio - simple black and whites which I liked. I like the idea of shooting in a field - the location is stunning. When I look at the photo you posted, I find myself wondering what her story is - does she live on that farm? is that her dog, etc? Is that what you are going for? You may have already done this but how about going in tigher, focusing on her and keeping the background soft/mysterious so your attn is all on her and that giant belly!
Very best,
Trisha

Pregnant Silence

Hello friends.

I went out with a friend of mine who is due soon and she wanted some pregnancy photos. We found a nice abandoned farmhouse in South Eastern Alberta and the session began.

I suppose that the pictures will make her very happy, but I feel that they are just a bit plain. I was lost for ideas. Maybe because I was never a parent or maybe I'm just empty, out of gas. I dont know.

Has anyone ever done this kind of shooting before?  Trisha I'm sure you have ideas having carried twins.  We are going to have another session so any helpful ideas will be welcome.

I know that this is not exactly documentary photography in the strict tradition, but it got me out of the house and had me shooting.

Thanks
Ted

Hey guys!

A little question for you, because it seems that no one will write if no subject is brought up...

When your on a project, a long term one, do you edit your photos daily, or only after the project...

And why, either way? I tend to only edit at the end, when I am back from the place and have been able to take a step back from the subject, the action. But then, am I missing anything on the spot? Maybe... But in a way, it brings me back to the roots of photography, where you only knew how well it had gone once you saw the develloped negs. Good or bad? Does it matter?

Let's see if anyone feels inspired!

And I am leaving you with two options on the best photograph...
Better composition? Or the expression of the guy? Or neither...

Have a good weekend everyone who's reading!

Motor Biking

Yes, it's almost summer and that brings out bikers into Waterton Park AB. Can you spot the american bikers? How about the canadian bikers? Just posting for the fun of it. My car broke down when I returned from the workshops so all I have is my trusty 1995 R100R Beemer to get me around. Who needs a car anyway. BTW I have no idea who these guys are. I'm not a flag waver, I don't even have a tattoo.
See you around friends

Bien le bonjour tout le monde!

Just back from a very good two weeks in a L'Arche community. I have just started looking at my photographs, but I really feel like the week in Toronto helped me push my work, and my eye a lot further. Plus, I came back to the roots of shooting with my heart, freely, but with a little head in the way to compose...

Anyways, keep posting people, and keep working! It is now official I will be back in Haïti around september or so. Continuing L'Arche's project and probably doing a little work on my own...

I shall leave you all with a foto, only one. Have a good weekend and come on guys! Don't hesitate to post on this blog!

Assiniboia Downs offers to purchase photos

Hi all,

When at the Assiniboia Downs Horse Racing over the weekend (2nd visit), I was approached by the Media & Promotions Coordinator. It was my F4-600mm that caught everyone's attention. I was offered to submit photos for their purchase for promotion of the race track. Next week I will have a printed portfolio ready.

Looking You Up

Hi Everyone, It has taken me a while to get on this blog. Numerous attempt's at sign in and account set up were unsuccessful. Persistence has paid off. Thanks Ben for getting this blog up and running. I am back shooting my bizarre little corner of the world, but I find my thoughts have turned mostly to motorcycling now that the winter has finally passed.
Stay in touch all,

Ted

Good review for Rodrigo's show

The Globe's art critic mentioned Rodrigo's show in Saturday's paper.

Check out the mini-review here (it's the last item):

As for me, there are only two more weeks of the spring term of Loyalist's photoj program. As much as it's been a great experience, I am really more interested in docu work, and am trying to find my way into an Amish community north of Belleville - they live on the next road down the highway from where I've been staying.

Hello from Parkdale ...

Hello Everyone,
Glad to see the site up and running.
I have been busy continuing with my own backyard Parkdale series and spending time with local shop owners, barbers, and people in and around the hood. I recommend you all get yourself a set of newborn twins as it's a great way to get conversations started :)
I am also putting together a series from Italy which I have shot during multiple trips over the last 10 years or so. Here is one I took just a couple of weeks before the workshop started. It's a rainy day here in Toronto so I found the mood fitting.
By the way, are we all going to be loading our slide show images? I remember some talk about that...
'Till soon,
Trisha

Assiniboine Downs

Hi all,
Since returning from Toronto I've been shooting for customers. I finally found time to shoot for myself. I enjoy shooting wildlife and want to incorporate the human aspect. I'm now in search of people that rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild. In the meantime, thought I'd start with people and domestic animals. (I placed no bets, I was too busy shooting).
